I try not to refer to them as my students, because more often they are teaching me, and for that I am grateful.

I usually lead the Sun Salutation sequence during class, and I've been doing so for years. About a month ago, I asked my practicing yogis during class if they were comfortable doing their Sun Salutations on their own (but together as a group), as a moving meditation. I felt my voice during the sequence was more of a distraction than an instruction. I wanted them to experience how even while moving, we can find the calming stillness in our minds.

Sun Salutations are empowering and energizing. They demand us to be present mentally, physically, and spiritually. They prove we can be strong, confident, and independent yogis.

It took a few rounds, but soon we were all moving and breathing on our own, but together. It wasn't long until the atmosphere in the room became totally energized. I've always encouraged my fellow yogis to do the number of salutations best for them, so some of us did 3-4, and others 10-15. After each yogi finished their sequences, they would quietly fold into Child's Pose and rest until the others finished.

The results were amazing! The response was so positive, we've continued.

My goal is to encourage & nurture independent, confident yogis. I believe it's important for the yogis who attend my classes to learn they can do yoga on their own. Their yoga is, after all, their practice. No two yogis are alike. We're all different. We move and breathe differently and we have unique and / or specific needs.

Of course, I adore instructing and practicing with fellow yoga folks, but I also love that the yogis who attend Be the Tree Yoga come to understand this is their own personal journey.

~Namaste
Believe it or not, tight hips can cause a multitude of other issues. Lower back pain, legs, knees...

You may not even realize your hips are tight until you attempt to sit in fire log pose or cow face pose and you're suddenly struck with an unworldly pain that prompts you to spring off the mat and run screaming from yoga class.

Fear not, brave yogis. There's a solution. Stretch. Yes, it's the very thing which alerted you, but I promise, it'll help.

One of my favorite websites / blogs to follow is Yoga by Candace. Not because we share the same name, (but that is very cool!) but because her blog is full of helpful tips and fabulous information. I also follow her on Facebook.

And guess what? April 1st began her April Yoga Project: 30 Day Yoga Program for Tight Hips. It's not to late to make the commitment to yourself.

Be the Tree Yoga is declaring April happy-hip month. :) Try it at home or join us in class. Trust me, your hips will be happy and thankful.

Be well, friends~
There's a chill in the air and winter will be here before you know it. But don't let your legs and feet freeze in yoga class. In the past, I've blogged about teaching teen girls here, and I've also expressed my desire to teach yoga to children on my How & Why I Became a Yogini page.

On September 23, 2014, the Houston area newspapers and news channels featured stories about the Houston Independent School District bringing yoga into a dozen schools. The benefits of yoga in schools are endless. Really. All I can say is...

Here are just a couple of the articles published yesterday, Sept. 23, 2014. Way to go, HISD!
As a former military wife, this subject is all too real. The results of time served, wartime or not, can and will leave lasting effects on our heroes. Good or bad. And yet, I'm quite certain it would be difficult to find any one of these folks who would take back one moment of their time spent in the military. It's just they way they are.

But what happens when they come home?

(Does that rhetorical question need be answered?)

I've known and heard about those who suffer from PTSD and other stress-related symptoms. Anxiety. Depression. Panic Disorder. Anger. Fear. The list goes on. Sure, there are medications and therapy, and then, there's yoga.

Yoga can help. It's been researched. The proof is in the results.
Stop. Focus. Breathe.Yes, it's just that simple.

Most of us live busy lives. We're always on the go. We overbook our schedules. Some of us never stop. When this happens, stress builds...and builds...and builds, until you feel like you'll explode (or implode). During times like this, we tend to shallow breathe, leaving us oxygen deprived, which only causes health issues, more tension, and guess what? More stress.

Answer?

Focus and take some deep breaths. Control it.

We all know breathing is an involuntary respiratory function, but controlled breathing is intentional. Here's an example:

Those who know me will tell you I don't deal well with high stress. One of my big stress inducers? Traffic. In Houston. Yeah, it's pretty awful, right? When driving in Houston, during traffic, I deep breathe. Fill the belly on my inhales, empty the belly on my exhales. It only takes a couple of minutes to calm the mind, reduce the blood pressure, and the occasional thoughts of road rage. You can also count your controlled breathing in your head, such as, "Inhale, 2, 3, 4...Exhale, 2, 3, 4" and so on until the stress is reduced.

Yes, sometimes even yogis get stressed out. It happens to the best of us.

This article in Forbes had some great information about controlling the breath.

Another great article about breathing to reduce stress.

Remember, the next time you feel yourself stressed out, stop, focus, and breathe.

~Namaste
To celebrate, we (and by that I mean the hubby) have done some renovations by taking down a wall to create more space. Luckily for us, the wall removal was easy since it wasn't a structural wall and had been added after the construction of the house.

*During June, if you bring a friend (who hasn't been to Be the Tree Yoga before), you each pay 1/2 price for that class! That's right! For one class, you and the friend only pay $5.

My how things have changed over the past 12 months! As the owner of Be the Tree Yoga, I'm thrilled to see the growth, in both clients and space, we've made.

Before, the Camphouse could only hold 8 mats (and it was a tight fit!). Now after the renovations, we can comfortably hold up to 15 mats, and yes, with room to move about. No more stretching out only to hold hands with your mat neighbor! :-)

If you live in the Brenham or surrounding areas, come check out yoga at the Camphouse. We'd love to have you! Email me for details. bethetreeyoga@gmail.com.

Class schedule: Monday & Thursday 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Thursday 10:30-11:30 a.m.
1 hour class only $10!
All levels welcome. :-)

10 Things I'd love for my yogis to know:

1. Your yoga mat is your palette. It's your creative space and only yours. Not mine, nor does it belong to the person next to you. Experiment. Don't be afraid to try new things.

2. Yoga isn't a competition. We don't come to class to compare ourselves with others. It's about you. It's about your journey and your practice.

3. The poses are for you. They're about combining mind, body, breath, and spirit. It's not about mastering the postures. It's about their benefits for you, on and off the mat. Don't get me wrong, it's way cool when we finally accomplish the perfect down dog, but striving for perfection can be a trap. Discover what it is from each posture YOU need, and seek it.

4. Don't forget to breathe. Nuff said, right?

5. Yoga isn't the miracle. You are. Yoga is a lot of things, but it isn't a fix-all. You, the practitioner, have to work at it. Each time you arrive on the mat. When you work yoga into all aspects of your life, the magic begins to happen.

6. Ask for help. When an instructor says, "Engage your core, breathe into your lower spine, use your breath to put space between the vertebrae, pull the belly into the spine, lift up out of the rib cage..." if you don't get it, ask for help. I need you to speak up, otherwise I may never know.

7. Yoga isn't a weight loss program. However, it brings awareness and mindfulness to the body and health. Yoga, coupled with a conscious diet, will begin to transform your life.

8. Don't be so hard on yourself. If you don't get a posture right away, give yourself some time. Go easy on yourself. Kindness goes a long way.

9. It helps to practice outside of class. Yoga once a week is good. Yoga twice a week is great. Yoga 3-4 times a week is super-yoga-tastic! If you need your instructor to jot down the class postures for the week, she'll be happy to do so.

10. Think of me as your guide, not so much as a teacher. Remember, I grow, watching you grow. I'm humbled to be a part of your yoga journey. Seeing the joy in your eyes after class, the smiles on your faces as we pull up into Tree, and the peace and serenity in your voices as we say, Namaste, are my rewards. Without you, I wouldn't be the instructor I am.

Namaste~
Happy National Yoga Month!

National Yoga month is a national observance by the Health and Human Services. You can visit the Yoga Health Foundation website to find out more. If you practice yoga, you already know the benefits. If you're thinking of trying yoga, here are a few positive aspects:

Stress relief

Flexibility

Increased strength

Cardiovascular conditioning

Balance

Inner Peace

Pain relief

If you've tried yoga and didn't like it, this month, give it another go. Try a different studio or a different instructor. If you attempted a Vinyasa class, try a Hatha class. Who knows, you may surprise yourself. :)

On September 30 studios, teachers, and practitioners can participate in a worldwide yoga event. The Time for Yoga event will be held in communities all across the globe at 7:00 p.m., local times.

Last year, I had spine surgery, and it took me quite a while to recover. I'm happy to report, I'm on the mend and bend. My own yoga practice is back in full swing, and I'll be starting new classes soon.
For the summer, I'll be teaching out of our camphouse on our property, located about 8 miles southwest of Brenham. It's a bit of a drive for those who live in town, but I believe the tranquility of the location will outweigh the drive.
Young people love the challenge of bending their bodies into the extreme balancing position of Eagle. I have to admit, it's one of my favorites as well. Their bodies are flexible, and they can do amazing things at this age. They're like human rubber bands.

Balancing postures, such as Eagle, not only challenge our bodies, but it also challenges our minds. Perched on one foot, with the opposite leg twisted and tucked around the grounded foot, you intertwine your arms, all during a squat, it is a test of your mind, body and spirit.
The two goofy teens laughed and giggled at each other as we pretzeled our bodies. I can say goofy because one of them is my youngest child. I think the six year old was a better student compared to the older two.
Parent and child yoga classes will begin on Tuesday, May 3, 2011. Classes will be held in the Brenham Community Education Building in room 7. Class time is 3:15 - 4:00 p.m.

Ages range from 12 mos. & walking through five years of age.

This is a wonderful opportunity to meet other parents who are interested in introducing their children to the practice (and fun!) of yoga. Yoga can give your child the tools to learn how to relax, focus and have fun doing so. Most children are flexible and limber, and can teach us adults a thing or two about stretching. :))
I believe we all reach a point in life when we wonder, "What am I doing? What have I done? & What will I do for the rest of my life?"

I woke up one day and asked myself these questions. My answers in order, "Um, I don't know, I'm a mom, a wife and a writer, I'm clueless."

So, I quit my day job and took a leap of faith. I figured the answers weren't going to fall from the sky and land in my lap. No, I was going to have to make them happen.

I decided to launch my yoga practice, Be the Tree Yoga. Yeah, it was terrifying, and I wasn't sure our family could financially support a lack of income. However, with the support of my family, and the invitation and enthusiasm of Brenham Community Education's director, my dream of being a yoga instructor part-time and writer part-time, is well on its way to becoming a reality.

I love teaching and sharing the multiple benefits, joy, peace, and health yoga has to offer. As the wise Gandhi once said...

We've just completed our 4th week of yoga classes at Brenham Community Ed. How time flows when you're in the zone! I had my doubts about the small room in the old building on Market Street, but I've grown to love that cozy space. When my Tuesday class is full, we are in all four corners, literally!

Between the two classes I've offered, I have eight students--a perfect number for the beginning of my business. They come to me from all different walks of life, different ages, professions, and abilities. I wonder if they are having as much fun as I am?

Our asana postures are increasing in difficulty, and the span of time holding each posture is lengthening. Their flexibility is increasing, as well as their stamina. The individual postures of our Sun Salutations are gaining fluidity. I couldn't be more proud of my students.

Monday evening, I received a generous token of thanks that only a teacher can appreciate. I bowed my head to my students and honored them with a Namaste', and I thanked them for being wonderful students. One of them said, "Well, you're a wonderful teacher."

I thought to myself as I rolled up my mat, now, that is what teaching is all about. Be the Tree Yogahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15622375166075256493noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4526389697334247307.post-65856378557791221672011-02-16T08:09:00.000-08:002011-02-16T08:18:58.768-08:00Relax and Quiet the Mind
Yoga is the practice of quieting the mind. ~Patanjali, translated from Sanskrit
I thought I would share my thoughts with you here. There is nothing more tranquil than quieting the mind. It is within these rare moments that we feel true inner peace. I cannot count how many times I've unrolled my mat, and allowed my inner chattering to dominate my practice. It's like listening to the constant cackle of a hen. I think Ellen best sums it up with this quote:

I was in full lotus position. My chakras were all aligned. My mind is cleared of all clatter and I'm looking out of my third eye and everything that I'm supposed to be doing. It's amazing what comes up, when you sit in that silence. "Mama keeps whites bright like the sunlight, Mama's got the magic of Clorox 2." ~Ellen DeGeneres

For others, they find it difficult to turn it off. There have been times during relaxation when I've actually fallen asleep. Which on the flip side, is not productive for the practicing yogi. It just means I need to get a good night's rest.

Close your eyes. Inhale through your nose and exhale with exaggeration through your mouth. Take a few of these cleansing breaths, letting go of your daily stresses. Set your stresses out beside you for a few moments. Yes, they'll still be there when you get up, but dealing with them should come easier afterwards.

Feel the tension leaving your body, mind, and soul.

One trick is to count your breath. Inhale 1, exhale 2, inhale 3, exhale 4 and so on. This method works if you cannot control setting aside your thoughts.

Hopefully, you should feel peaceful and calm; you should feel capable of tackling whatever comes your way. Congratulate yourself.

If at first you don't succeed, try and try again! It'll happen. The mind is powerful; it's up to you to control it. When we finally relax the mind, we can unite the mind with our body and spirit. Hence the word union in the meaning of yoga.
I've been collecting mats, blocks and straps for my students. As I sit and stare at the pile of loot, I wonder how I will pack it for traveling. Eight arms would be nice right about now. Should I invest in a wagon to drag it all? Would a wagon even fit in the trunk of my Jetta?

A large tote may work or an oversized duffel bag. If you have a good idea, comment below and let me know. This traveling yogini needs to pack 10 mats, 5 blocks, a bag full of straps and a computer + speakers. I'd love to hear from you! Be the Tree Yogahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15622375166075256493noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4526389697334247307.post-46432358807753967742011-01-29T07:10:00.000-08:002011-01-30T09:55:25.217-08:00Extra Mats for Students
Guess what I requested for my birthday last week? Extra yoga mats for my upcoming yoga classes.

I received 4 new mats, giving me a total of 6 extra mats for my students to borrow! If you're thinking you'd like to sign-up for a class, but don't have a mat, email me! I'd love to help out. I don't want the simple fact of you not having a mat be the reason you didn't sign up for yoga.

(Last night I saw the rest of my family and received 4 extra mats, now Be the Tree Yoga has 10 extras!!!)

If you haven't read the entry from last week about Yoga & Teens, read it!! If you know of a teen who's interested in yoga, send it to them. If you're a teen who wants to learn yoga, ask your parents to sign you up for a class today or email me with questions! bethetreeyoga@gmail.com.
Be the Tree Yogahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15622375166075256493noreply@blogger.com0
